Yesterday I was working on a clients garden, as a part of an aftercare package, and this gave me the opportunity to observe what has seeded where, and what is on the move in the garden. After winter, the dynamic garden will have made some of its own adjustments. Some plants will have succumbed to the frost – some plants will have, some of the same species won’t, just centimetres apart – such is the fine line in natural processes. Some plants will have self sown within the garden and are beginning to show themselves, waking up for the new growing season. Some plants will be changing their form as their heavy leaves and flowers begin to weight their branches. Others will be pushing upright, with new growth. There is so much excitement and change in the spring, everything is finding its place, getting ready for the growing season and pushing to get itself in the best place possible for the year ahead. I feel it is important at this time of year to observe for a while and see how the garden settles, making only small or sure changes, being careful not to weed, cut or clear too much, until you are confident that the way the dynamic garden is, or isn’t, moving in the way you wish.
